Tajuk CU | Perform SMAW 1G, 2G, 3G, 4G, 5G and 6G butt welding (carbon steel) |
Penerangan CU | Perform SMAW 1G, 2G, 3G, 4G, 5G and 6G butt welding (carbon steel) describes the competency in joining two pieces of metal end-to-end using a consumable flux coated electrode. This welding technique creates strong, high-quality welds suitable for various industrial requirements. The process begins with establishing an electric arc between the coated electrode and the edges of the base metal, generating the necessary heat to melt both the electrode and the steel being joined. The coated electrode serves as both the filler material and a source of shielding gas and slag, which protect the molten weld pool from atmospheric contamination and weldment respectively during solidification stage. Butt welding specifically refers to aligning the steel pieces edge-to-edge, resulting in a continuous seam that is especially useful in applications requiring a flush finish. SMAW allows for manual control, requiring the welder to skilfully navigate the electrode along the joint to create the desired weld bead. This method is versatile, as it can be performed in various positions—flat, horizontal, vertical, and overhead—making it adaptable for different contexts, including structural and pipeline welding. In the 1G the pipe or plate is positioned horizontally with the welding performed on the top surface. The welder moves in a straight line, maintaining a consistent arc length and angle to produce a uniform weld bead. The 2G position involves the pipe or plate is positioned vertically, with the weld performed in a horizontal direction. The welder must control the arc and maintain appropriate heat to prevent sagging and ensure a uniform weld bead. In the 3G the plate is positioned vertically, with the weld performed in an uphill (vertical up) or downhill (vertical down) direction. This position requires controlling the weld pool and heat input to create a consistent and strong weld bead. The 4G requires welding on a plate is positioned horizontally but welded from below. The welder must control the weld pool to prevent dripping and achieve a uniform weld bead, making it one of the more challenging positions. The 5G (Horizontal Fixed Position), the pipe is positioned horizontally but fixed so it cannot be rotated. The welder must weld in multiple positions (bottom, sides, and top) as they move around the pipe, with the weld performed in an uphill (vertical up) or downhill (vertical down) direction, requiring versatile skills and precise control. Lastly, the 6G (Inclined Fixed Position) involves the pipe is positioned at a 45-degree angle and is fixed with the weld performed in an uphill (vertical up) or downhill (vertical down) direction. This position combines all the complexities of welding in multiple orientations (overhead, vertical, horizontal and flat). Welders in this position must demonstrate exceptional skill and control to produce a high-quality weld bead. The person who is competent in this CU should be able to carry out SMAW 1G plate butt welding, carry out SMAW 2G plate butt welding, carry out SMAW 1G pipe butt welding, carry out SMAW 2G pipe butt welding, carry out SMAW 3G plate butt welding (uphill), carry out SMAW 3G plate butt welding (downhill), carry out SMAW 4G plate butt welding, carry out SMAW 5G pipe butt welding (uphill), carry out SMAW 5G pipe butt welding (downhill), carry out SMAW 6G pipe butt welding (uphill) and carry out SMAW 6G pipe butt welding (downhill). The outcome of this CU is the formation of of high-quality welds characterized by structural integrity and uniform, consistent weld beads across all positions. These welds adhere to industry standards and specifications, ensuring they are free from defects. The weld metal produced demonstrates essential properties, including high tensile strength, good ductility, adequate hardness, and impact toughness, which are vital for the durability and reliability of the welded joints. Additionally, proper fusion and penetration are achieved, ensuring a strong bond with the base metal. |
