Tajuk CUPerform SMAW 1F, 2F, 3F and 4F fillet welding (carbon steel)
Penerangan CUPerform SMAW 1F, 2F, 3F and 4F fillet welding (carbon steel) describes the competency in joining two pieces of metal that meet at a right angle, forming a "T" shaped joint, using a consumable flux coated electrode. This widely used welding technique relies on the creation of an electric arc between the electrode and the base metal, generating heat that melts both the electrode and the edges of the base materials to form a molten weld pool. The coated electrode serves as both filler material and a means of shielding the weld pool from atmospheric contamination, as the coating produces a shielding gas and slag during the process. SMAW allows for the creation of triangular cross-section fillet welds, reinforcing the joint effectively. The method is highly versatile, capable of being performed in various positions (flat, horizontal, vertical, and overhead), and is characterized by its manual operation, requiring the welder to skilfully navigate the electrode along the joint. Welding in the 1F position involves holding the electrode at a 45-degree angle and depositing the weld bead in a straight line on a flat surface. The 2F position requires welding on a vertical surface, where the weld bead is deposited parallel to the axis of the weld, necessitating skilled control to counteract the effects of gravity. Competency in the 3F position involves welding on a vertical surface, creating the weld bead uphill (vertical up) along the axis of the weld. The 4F (overhead) position requires welding underneath the workpiece, where the welder must control the weld pool to prevent dripping, ensuring the weld is uniform and free from defect.

The person who is competent in this CU should be able to carry out SMAW 1F plate fillet welding, carry out SMAW 2F plate fillet welding, carry out SMAW 3F plate fillet welding and carry out SMAW 4F plate fillet welding.

The outcome of this CU is the formation of high-quality fillet welds, characterized by their structural integrity, uniform appearance and adherence to specifications. These welds demonstrate strong bonds and adequate fusion between the base metal and weld metal, ensuring the welded components can withstand the intended stresses and loads. The proficiency in different positional welding (flat, horizontal, vertical and overhead) enables the welder to create consistent and defect-free welds that comply with relevant standards and guidelines. This versatility is crucial in a wide range of industries and applications, ensuring reliable and durable joins in various fabrication and construction projects.
