Tajuk CUCLARIFICATION AND FILTRATION OPERATION
Penerangan CUClarification and Filtration Operation describes the competency required to operate the sedimentation and filtration process. He/She has to conduct water sampling, run water tests and perform various cleaning activities to ensure the efficiency of the clarification and filtration operations which produces partially treated water. The purpose of the sedimentation process is to remove suspended solids that are denser than water. This helps to reduce the load on the subsequent filtration unit. The suspended solids may be bacteria, clays, silts or they may be pre-conditioned by prior treatment of the raw water. Sedimentation is accomplished by decreasing the velocity of the water allowing settling of suspended material in sedimentation basins, called sludge, which will then be piped to drying lagoons.

The primary purpose of filtration is to remove suspended materials such as small particles and microorganisms from the raw water stream. Water flows through a filter made of layers of sand and gravel, and in some cases, crushed anthracite. Filtration collects the suspended impurities in water and enhances the effectiveness of disinfection. The filters are routinely cleaned by backwashing.

The person who is competent in this CU shall be able to prepare for clarification and filtration water sampling, carry out clarification and filtration water sampling, conduct settled water test, carry out settled water rate testing, perform clarification cleaning activity, monitor filtered water flow, monitor head loss, carry out filter backwash and produce clarification and filtration records.

The outcome of this competency is to run the operation of separation process in the optimum conditions to meet the criteria of water quality as stated in Standard Operating Procedure (SOP).
